Chorleywood Sunday 1sts - League v Southgate
25th Jun 06 - CV - The Common
Won by 58 runs
Having been easily beaten in the their opening league game and now facing a Southgate team who had racked up 412 runs in theirs, the sunday first XI were understandably a little apprehensive coming into this game. Things didn't look good when skipper Neil Ret, under strict instructions to win the toss and field in order that the majority of his team could watch the football, promptly lost the toss and it came as no surprise when 'wood were asked to bat.

The opening partnership of Shamil Mubarak and Mark Watkiss looked good briefly before both succombing in quick succession, bringing Matt Cullen and Asad Ladha to the crease. Ladha made a fine looking 18 before becoming A Vincents second victim and in walked sunday 2's regular Martin Tyler, in good form with the bat after hanging up his bowling boots earlier in the season. Cullen and Tyler played superbly to put on 111 for the 4th wicket before the former became the first of Ashleys six victims just 13 short of his maiden 'wood century. Even more galling was Tylers dismissal for 49 not long after, having just missed out on a 50 the week before too. Unfortunately the 'wood innings crumbled from then on in, with the final three wickets falling to Ashley in one over with Nigel Tyler watching helplessly from the non striking end, and the total of 209 never looked enough!

Things went from bad to worse with the second ball of the Southgate innings when Neil Ret pulled his groin muscle, could play no more part in the attack and had to hand over the new ball to youngsters Lyndon Ryan and Andy Spurr. Both bowled pretty well and picked up a wicket each, however when they came off with only ten overs gone, Southgate were ominously poised on 76-2. This forced Ret to bring on the second installment of the sunday 2's rescue squad in the shape of Andy Lowe and Nigel Tyler who each bowled 10 overs unchanged for a combined haul of 6 wickets to leave Southgate teetering on 130-8. The Southgate skipper, coming in at number 9, had ideas of finishing the job himself, however when his stumps were uprooted while trying to heave an Asad Ladha arm ball over the pavillion he would have been regretting his decision to mix his batting order up to accomdate those who wanted to watch the football! The deserved 'wood victory came not long after when A Vincent looped a tricky catch off Lyndon Ryan straight to Martin Tyler in the covers to leave Rets team thoroughly satisfied with a great team performance and a win by 58 runs which more than made up for having to miss yet another dull England performance in Germany.
