| A relaxed and cheerful Wood team turned up at Sandridge for the County Cup second round match. The pitch looked to be 'challenging' and on being inserted your correspondent and Young Watson soon realised setting a total was not going to be easy. In the first over 2 rolled and one went over the batsman's head. The first 20 overs were going to be crucial as it became apparent Sandridge were going to bowl their 2 best bowlers out and hope to take a number of wickets. The home team did employ an unusual tactic by bringing a donkey into the clubhouse.. an attempt to distract the batsman, Paul Graver believes this is the first time this has happened in a County Cup second round match! That we got to the 20 over mark with only 2 down and 40 on the board was first class, Matt C and Tom began the counter attack against the change bowlers before both were dismissed by good catches in the deep. They were replaced by Young Rice and Young Tyler who put on over 50 in the matches best partnership of the day. The target of 166 was always going to be too much, the donkey left, with Nigel taking an early wicket and Matt C running out the other opener before the team had reached 5 we were quickly in control. Young Rice was bowling with confidence and after he complained that the umpire was in his way and he was duly rewarded with a fine 6 for (8 wickets over the weekend for the young man). Old Rice tried to give us a demonstration of what he was like when bowling of his long run but despite this we mopped up the final wickets and won by over a hundred runs. It was an enjoyable day and special thanks must go to Helen 'The best looking Scorer in the League' Smithson for the immaculate score book.
