Chorleywood Saturday 2nds - League v Parkfield & Headstone |
8th Sep 07 - HL - Away |
Win by 7 wickets |
A nervous, excited and tense Second team rocked up to top of the table Parkfield knowing a win would guarantee promotion to Div 5. A quick inspection of the pitch confirmed that Parkfield had been putting a lot of effort into improving their
ground, the track looked a good one and so it proved (well done Parkfields groundsman). After a friendly welcome form the home sec. Ben won the toss and stuck Parkfield in. Chas and Pete (sounds like a singing combo) opened up, they bowled
beautifully with pace swing and movement. Pete took the first 3 then Chas the next 2 including the key wicket of Parkfield star bat, Ian Schmid and at 57-5 we were in control. The catching was first class with the best a diving one handed a
ffair by Jeff. Jeff has caught everything this year (unless his father in law has been bowling!). Rosie replaced Pete and was as economical as ever and while there seemed no need to change Chas, the skipper bought on Will and was immediately proved correct thanks to a running (!) catch by Johnny. Pete returned to claim his first 5 for and then the spin twins wrapped up the home teams innings, we had to chase down 112.
There was a tricky 8 over spell to be negotiated before tea, which we took having reached 26 for the loss of only one wicket. The Parkfield attack boasted the 4 quickest bowlers in the league and they charged in the great energy and commitment, Ben went on the attack and smashed a quick fire 14 then Jeff and your correspondent dug in. This lefthand / righthand pairing blunted the attack with their 5th 50 partnership of the season. Watched by the entire 1st team who had come to support us after demolishing Hoddesdon U12s by 2.30, the score edged up to 87. The third wicket fell but any nerves were calmed by Tom who hit 3 lovely 4s to take us to victory and the celebrations began.
Happily as all the other top teams lost, Parkfield also went up and at about 7.30 we found out we had won the league,
the wine flowed and general befuddlement kicked in.. the evening finished at Long Island. We were brilliant!
