Chorleywood Sunday 1sts - Friendly v Rickmansworth |
19th Apr 09 - Friendly - The Common |
Won by 2 runs |
Chorleywood snatched a dramatic win by just 2 runs over neighbours Rickmansworth in their opening game of the season on Sunday.
In a low-scoring game, Chorleywood lost the toss and were asked to bat first, but found the going tough on a bowler-friendly pitch and were bowled out for just 111 in 42.4 overs. Tom Smithson top scored with a gritty 36 as he and Mike Reeve shared a vital third-wicket partnership of 43, including the first boundary of the game as late as the 18th over. Debutant Andy Elsmore upped the tempo with a couple of massive sixes in his 23 as 'Wood struggled into 3-figures, although they were helped by at least half a dozen catches being dropped by the visitors.
Rickmansworth then started briskly as they strode to 47 without loss before losing both openers in the space of 3 deliveries. Dave Brabham picked up the first wicket of the season for 'Wood thanks to a sharp stumping from 'keeper Andy Orange. Chorleywood then turned the screw and picked up wickets regularly whilst Rickmansworth's only answer appeared to be to try some even more extravagant shots. Leggie Andrew Dunning was the pick of 'Wood's attack as he took 4-22 from his 10 overs, including 2 catches off his own bowling. Skipper Nigel Tyler led from the front by picking up 3 wickets for just 26 runs in 10 miserly overs, before opener Jamie Smithson came back into the attack and held his nerve to claim the final 2 wickets in a tense finale as Rickmansworth's policy of trying to win the game with boundaries eventually proved their undoing and gave Chorleywood the narrowest of victories.
