Chorleywood Saturday 2nds - League v Hemel Hempstead 3 |
21st Jul 07 - HL - Away |
Match Drawn |
On another wet day the promotion challenging seconds were ultimately denied 30 points by a last wicket stand from the Hemel tail enders which lasted 4 overs. Losing the toss the Wood were inserted and breaking with tradition for the first time this season we had a repeat opening partnership, Jeff and Darey. They batted well on a very difficult and bouncy track accumulating 78 albeit with some luck. A mini collapse then ensued before Johnny and Michael launched a counter attack which got the score up to 160 off 44 overs. It then rained! We had tea and Ben took the aggressive option and declared. 7 overs were lost but with Pete delivering an excellent opening spell with 2 wickets we looked to be in control. Unfortunatly the pitch was now playing well and more importantly Gary could not bowl. This was a shock to the ECB inspectors visiting the match to check on Garys action, his new style of bowling which has been titled straight bowling (16 wickets at 7 this year) is threatening to end cricket as we know it as batsman do know what to do we these so called straight deliveries! Without Gary we had to reply on more normal methods, half trackers from Nigel one of which gave us a wicket thanks to a good stumping, seem movement etc. and some good close to the wicket catching. However we did not show enough guile to get the last wicket and we are still a few points outside the promotion places.. highlight of the day, an excellent declaration which very nearly worked.
